What drives you? That question is definitely different for everyone. What is your Y?
Why are some people so driven and others not? If I knew the answers to that, I would be a rich man.
I can only speak for me, what is my purpose? My purpose it to make a difference in peoples lives. Whether it’s my clients, my professional peers, my family, or just my fellow human.
What drives me? The pursuit of excellence, I would have to say, I am one of those people that respond better to negative reinforcement than positive reinforcement. Different things work for different people.
Me wanting to excel in my profession, has a direct relationship with instances in my life where people told me to “accept my station” in life. These are the people that said-
“Don’t want to much”
“Don’t waste your time, it’s not possible”
“Be quiet you don’t want to sound arrogant”
“Why don’t you apply for your safety school?”
“ Why don’t you work for corporate America?”
I don’t want to rebuttal each of these statements ( it would take too long) – But I wanted to state that, even if I fail at any of the goals I set out before me, I am ok with it. I would rather fail trying, than succeed on a different scale and not know what I was truly capable of.
Failure would only drive me to redouble my efforts and try harder. ( this I know to be true, I don’t know how to quit, it’s a word I never bothered to respect) it has happened at different times in different parts of my life, and I change my approach but never change the goal.
My motivation is self-perpetuating, but ever evolving. The target will never be fulfilled because as I gain ground, there are new horizons. I embrace that.
Life is tough, but it’s a gift, and you owe it to your family, your fellow human, to go as far as you can. For those that may not be able to due to physical or mental limits.
